Is it Member Yuji or Hostess Julie?

Only the Kookmin University reseach ethics committee can decide. Or can it?

(Source- 언론알아야바꾼다 youtube 7.28 ) Kim Gun-hee: I was too busy getting my bachelors, masters, and doctorate to have the time to also work as "Julie."

This episode in ongoing saga of presidential candidate Yoon Seok-yeol's family corruption came to a head when the leading conservative candidate's wife Kim Geon-hee decided to talk to the press about her alleged wrongful acts in the past. Specifically, she decided to publicly address the viral internet rumors that, years ago, she was employed as a hostess at the night club in the Renaissance Ramada Hotel in Seoul. The allegations orginated with the independent investigative web site 열린공감TV on youtube.

The story widely circulated and followed on the internet and social media alleges that Kim in the capacity of hostess at the night club came to have a relationship with prosecutor Yang Dae-taek, with whom she cohabited while said prosecutor's wife was living in the US with the rest of his family. According to the reports, Yang and Kim even went on an extended European vacation tour while Kim's mother sent money to Yang's wife in the US. This would be little more than scandal mongering if it weren't for allegations that prosecutor Yang improperly accepted such gifts and favors to influence the outcome of litigation subsequent to a fraudulent business transaction between Kim's mother and her former business partner Jang Dae-taek. Jang went to prison and lost over two million dollars while mother Choi walked away from court nominally blameless with all the money.

Jang and now Yang Dae-taek's mother allege that Kim and Yang lived together in the Seocho Acrovista luxury apartments, before Kim Geon-hee was introduced to Yoon Seok-yeol, another up and coming senior prosecutor at the time. Kim allegedly dumped Yang, and moved in with Yoon in the same Acrovista building. Kim and Yoon married on short notice in 2012 when Yoon was accused by Jang of having a relationship with someone with an interest in ongoing litigation. Jang, over the years, never gave up on his attempts to seek legal redress against the alleged injustice perpertrated by Kim's mother, Choi, who is now Yoon's mother in law. Choi is currently in jail awaiting a review trial on unrelated medical payments fraud charges. She was recently found guilty at the first trial.

So Kim chose to defend her reputation publicly by stating in a friendly media interview that allegations about her prior secret life as hostess Julie couldn't be true because she was too busy working on her bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees.

(Source- 언론알아야바꾼다 youtube 7.28 ) Thesis cover page title: Research study concerning online Fortune Contents user satisfaction or disatisfaction according to member retention or loss. The now infamous "member Yuji" mistranslation is highlighted in the red box for emphasis. The garbled English translation of the title also shows the translator had difficulty with the reversed syntax in the original Korean title.

Unfortunately, one enterprising reporter obtained some documentation related to Kim's alleged doctorate dissertation, the cover of which appears in the image above. The title page of the thesis reveals two things almost instantly upon a cursory look. The first is that the putative author Kim, really had no idea what the paper was about, because she or someone else obviously mistranslated the title into unintelligible nonsense in which the expression "member Yuji" replaces the expression "member retention," in an ostensible marketing research study to evaluate the effectiveness of promotional contents by researching the retention or loss of members of an online marketing enterprise. The error appears to be a common one occurring in mechanical translation applications devoid of context knowledge. Observers joke that it must have been google translate. What it implies is that the author had no knowledge of the context of the thesis either. The second obvious implication in the nonsensical thesis title translation is that a doctoral review committee (ethically) could not have possibly let such a gross error pass through it's academic review. To be precise, it raises the issue whether any such review even occured.

(Source- 언론알아야바꾼다 youtube 7.28 ) The materials concerning the alleged improper research were submitted for ethics review at Kookmin University on July 6. They have 30 days to for the ethics committe to assemble and discuss formation of a preliminary investigation committee (by Aug 5); The preliminary investigation committee has thirty days (by 9.4) to make findings and to decide whether the calling of the main ethics review investigation committee is required. If the main investigation is required by a formal committee, then it must be formed and meet within thirty days (by 10.4); the main committee then has 90 days to make its findings and final recommendation (by 1.2.2022); the University issues a final judgement by 2.2.2022 (required within six months).

Other aspects of the suspicious nature of the thesis involve independent assessments that large portions of the thesis text are plagiarized. Necessarily, Kookmin University was prompted to intiate what appears to be a rather labored and time consuming administrative investigation and review process which includes a preliminary investigation, the formulation a preliminary investigative committee, the report on its findings, and if warranted, the submission of the findings to a formal consideration by a broader academic ethics review committee yet to be formed, and then a final report on its findings and recommendation. The final decision by the university doesn't have to take place until February 2, 2022, approximately one month before the presidential election March 6, 2022. It almost seems as if the entire schedule were formulated with a view toward the electoral process.

One could easily anticipate that the Yoon family will litigate to interpose a legal injunction of the formal academic ethics review proceeding at some point, as a violation of the prospective first lady's constitutional rights. This is what Yoon did to avoid his suspension by the Justice Ministry's committee appointed to investigate his professional misconduct. Between the injunction and Yoon's later resignation as Prosecutor General of South Korea, the disciplinary committee's findings of professional misconduct and sanctions had no effect whatever on Yoon. Yoon resigned ostensibly to comply with the one year cooling off period that some unelected government officials must abide by to qualify to run for elective office. Yoon is currently the leading conservative candidate running for president of South Korea.

President Moon's "coattails" benefit Democratic candidate Lee Jae-myung

(Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 youtube 7.19) Moon Jae-in's remarkable political resilence demonstrated in July 17-18 Korea Research survey of 1,015 persons commissioned by MBC News. Approval 44.2, disapproval 51.6 percent. The term coat tails now being applied to President Moon rather than lame duck.

(Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 youtube 7.19) This chart demonstrates the relative support for the presidents of the democratic period in South Korea at the end of the first quarter in the third, fourth, and fifth years in office in their respective 5 year, one term presidencies. Bar graph (left side) From Kim Young-sam, (bottom, earliest), up to (top) Moon Jae-in, the current president of South Korea. The line graph (right) reflects support for each president over their respective five year terms comparatively. In the current period of the 5th year, Moon 43%, Park Geun-hye, impeached, Lee Myung-bak 25%, No Mu-hyun 16%, Kim Dae-jung 33%, and Kim Young-sam 14%. The South Korea Gallup poll is credited as the source. Nobel Peace Prize winner Kim Dae-jung is the only former president with numbers nearly as strong as current democratic President of South Korea Moon Jae-in. Kim Dae-jung's presidency was followed by that of another democratic party president, No Mu-hyun.
(Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 youtube 7.19) Presidential candidates Lee Jae-myung, democratic Gyeonggido governor, 27.1 percent; Yoon Seok-yeol, unaffiliated conservative candidate, 19.7 percent; and Lee Nak-yeon, former democratic prime minister, 14.6 percent.

About 3 percent of the respondents wouldn't vote for these candidates and from about 18 to 25 percent of those queried either didn't know, were unavailable or didn't answer. It's early in the election campaign cycle, but if these numbers held up, and Lee Jae-myung wins the democratic primary, he would win the presidency in the March 2022.

The caption under the photo says "following the precedent." Millions of ordinary South Koreans turned out for these demonstrations against corruption and authoritarianism in the conservative administration at that time. It was this movement that resulted in Moon Jae-in's election as President of South Korea. Thus far, he has proved resilent in the face of consistent criticism in conservative media in South Korea, and the US and Japan. Ironically, the placards in the photo calling for impeachment say "by way of the people's power, impeach." The current conservative party opposition in South Korea uses the term "people's power" in the most recently adopted name for their party, People's Power Party.

Lee Jun-seok, PPP party leader doesn't control anything

US media and leadership circles are celebrating the prospect of having the young Harvard alumnus, Lee Jun-seok, in a position of political power in South Korea. The reality is that the young media savvy demagogue has never won a political election, having failed three times to get elected to the National Assembly. The media personality Lee came to be selected for leadership of the so called "People's Power Party" ( 국민의 힘당 ) due to the conspicuous failures of prior conservative political leaders such as Na Kyung-won and Hwang Kyo-ahn to inspire the public. In the not too distant past Hwang was associated with the failed administration of the impeached former president Park Geun-hye. Na and Hwang both are linked to conservative presidential candidate Yoon Seok-yeol coverups which this blog has described in prior posts.* Additionally, Na is linked to college admission and paralympics corruption on behalf of her daughter which Yoon, allegedly, may have played a role in covering up.

(Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 youtube 7.12) 36 year old Lee Jun-seok at a PPP party gathering.

Lee Jun-seok, the youngest person to lead a major political party, came to forefront because he appeals to poorly informed, bigoted young males in South Korea. This demographic from 18 to 30 years of age voted for conservative candidates by an overwhelming margin in the recent off cycle elections to select the mayors of Seoul and Busan. One leader from the so called "old order" on the conservative side is Kim Mu-sung. Kim is a long time conservative politician in the National Assembly. He, like several of the old order politicians are tainted, fairly or unfairly, with the pro-Japanese label. Kim's father was a notorious collaborator with the Japanese during WWII, actively supporting the war effort on behalf of the Japanese colonial administration. In keeping with the old Korean saying "ten thousand years is not too long to avenge a grudge," Kim's family history renders his personal prospects as a presidential candidate problematic. Kim is suspected to be the power behind Lee Jun-seok. The Bareun Dang, (Righteous Party) founder, Yoo Seung-min, is also believed to be a Lee supporter. Both Kim and Yoo, are former presidential hopefuls.

Lee Jun-seok, as a computer science type, was groomed by powers on the right. He was patronized by former President Park Geun-hye. His public persona is portrayed as a (Korean Andrew Yang or South Korea's own Ahn Chul-su) type of technocratic elite, falsely labeled as a "liberal conservative." Lee, for all of his political promotion by the right, serving in various party committees and roles, actually has very little academic understanding of history or politics. His business experience, aside from garnishing some lucrative government subsidies early in his career, isn't that extensive according to his critics. Lee's lack of hands-on polical experience is evident in a series of gaffes he committed in the last several days. Most visible in South Korea was a well publicized meeting with the democratic party leader, Song Yeong-gil, in which Lee agreed to a proposal for pandemic disaster relief payments to be distributed to the public. Less than two hours later the proposal was repudiated by the PPP assembly floor leader. Lee had to be told publicly that it wasn't his role to make agreements on behalf of the opposition party in the National Assembly without prior consultation and deliberation among party representatives in the National Assembly.

(Source- 시사건건 7.14) Pundit Hol Seu-yong's program shows a cartoon depicting Lee Jun-seok, as a child on a tricycle, while the PPP floor leader in the National Assembly rebukes the democratic party leader for taking advantage of a child, and ripping up the inter-party agreement on universal cash payments to pandemic strapped citizens.

Lee went on to make other public gaffes which are being covered mostly in South Korean opposition media sources. His misogyny manifested once again in a proposal to eliminate the Department of Women and Families in the South Korean government. While Lee claimed his proposal is aimed at reducing social discord concerning women's rights, the actual effect is exactly the opposite, fueling the social culture wars, the red meat of the South Korean "il be" misogynist movement on the internet, that Lee Joon-seok represents. This constitutency of angry young males might be compared to US "deplorables.*"

* Lee Jun-seok- a "deplorable" play for disaffected younger male voters, 6.13.21, https://civilizationdiscontents.blogspot.com/2021/06/lee-jun-seok-deplorable-play-for.html

One prospect that has US and Japanese observers salivating is that Lee wants to also dismantle the Unification Ministry in South Korea which according to him, has no role in the South Korean government and has never accomplished anything. One has to wonder whether Lee ever studied his own nation's history or how well informed he is. It's almost as if his script was written in Washington, D.C. It was reported in one online South Korean media source, but not in the English language version of conservative Korean newspapers, that Lee said, that just as Taiwan and the PRC would never unite, neither would North and South Korea. Another is taking a stance critical of China. Lee has identified the "democracy movement" in Hong Kong, (a US-UK sponsored movement), with the Korean democracy movement, particularly that which opposed the Chun Du-won dictatorship. This is an absurd correlation that Joshua Wong, the Hong Kong separatist leader, has also made. The error being, that the US sponsored a series of three brutal dictatorships in South Korea, that the democracy movement opposed. The US supports the violent separatist movement in Hong Kong as part of its divide and conquer strategy against the PRC. SCMP recently reported that Lee actually participated in Hong Kong protests in 2019. Worse, he has raised the Hong Kong issue publicly in a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Seoul. This is a red flag in terms of who may be pulling Lee Jun-seok's puppet strings.* Is he just an opportunist? According to CGTN, the Chinese media source, PPP officials have tried to walk back some of Lee's ill considered remarks concerning China. According to the Joongang Ilbo account, Lee claimed in an explanation to be speaking "for the Korean people."

Lee Jun-seok, South Korea’s youngest ever party leader, vows to confront China’s ‘cruelty’, including policies in Hong Kong, SCMP, 7.12.21, https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/east-asia/article/3140718/lee-jun-seok-south-koreas-youngest-ever-party-leader-vows.

Lee Jun-seok, is cut from the same cloth as other US acclimated imperial proxies in Asian history. Western media again are creating a falsely based credibility for an incompetent demagogue. Because Lee has been educated at a US institution (Harvard) and speaks English, he shares the exploitable features of a character like the Japanese Baron Kentaro Kaneko, (Yale) with whom Teddy Roosevelt laid the foundation for the US and Japanese Pacific empires and WWII. Other similar figures in the history of US-Asian relations are T.V. Soong, (Harvard), and Madame Chiang Kai-shek (Mai-ling Soong, Wesleyan) in Nationalist China, whose family corruption led the Chinese Nationalists to defeat.* Syngman Rhee was another US proxy in South Korea with little political legitimacy by the end of WWII, who established with US support, the first South Korean dictatorship. Rhee and his cadre of Japanese trained Korean generals couldn't wait to instigate the final battle in the civil war in Korea and thought they would win with US support.* The US cultivation of figures like Lee Jun-seok gives Americans a false impression of the state of affairs in Asia, and is conducive to a harmful, undue and dangerous US influence over the internal affairs of its nominally sovereign ally.

내로남불=윤로남불 Yoon Seok-yeol's Hypocrisy

(Source- 알리미 황희두 youtube 7.10 ) So this political cartoon shows Yoon Seok-yeol, appearing to resemble Hitler as he sometimes does in these cartoons, saying the university decides whether his wife's Ph.D. was plagiarized. So he and his wife Kim Geon-hee appear in the frame suitable for the mainstream press reporting. Outside the scope of that reporting, Yoon wields his prosecutorial club (issuing warrants against multiple colleges) to destroy the former Justice Minister Cho Guk, and his daughter in the picture, because she is listed as an author of a professional paper.

내로남불 ne ro nam bul, a reference to hypocrisy and double standards is a favored saying in contemporary South Korea. Of course, here it is applied to Yoon Seok-yeol the leading conservative candidate for president in South Korea who just declared his candidacy formally on June 29. Literally, the phrase means "when I do it it's love, when someone else does it its adultery ( 내가하면 로맨스 남이하면 불륜 ). In this political cartoon, the phrase has been adapted to fit Yoon personally due to his special brand of duplicity. So the saying at the bottom of the cartoon says "Yoon ro nam bul," (윤로남불).

The latest embarrassing allegation about Yoon's wife, Kim Geon-hee, is that the Ph.D. thesis that was approved by her university is plagiarized in large part. It's alleged that substantial portions of the thesis are taken directly from another similar thesis article written by a different author without attribution. This came up because sensational allegations against Kim that have gone viral on social media. One of these as yet unproven allegations was that Kim was a "hostess" going by the moniker "Julie," at the former Renaissance Ramada in Seoul, where she formed relationships with prosecutor Yang Dae-taek, and later Yoon Seok-yeol, whom she married in 2012. The distilled version of these allegations is that "Julie" used her relationship with these prosecutors to unethically influence the outcomes of criminal and civil investigations affecting her mother Choi, and herself. Allegedly, family relatives of Choi have confirmed to investigative reporters that Yoon and Kim met by way of an introduction through the owner of the Renaissance.*

Kim made the mistake of publicly asserting that she was too busy as a post grad Ph.D. candidate to be working as a hostess as alleged. Some reporter took the initiative, perhaps by unlawful means, to obtain copies of relevant records related to the Ph.D. thesis. His investigation determined, allegedly, that Kim's thesis is plagiarized at least in substantial part. Yoon has threatened to investigate the reporter for posing as a law enforcement official to obtain access to the records. One of the pundits critical of Yoon has observed that Yoon's threatened criminal countermeasure against the reporter involves process rather than substance.

The university (국민대) says they will conduct a review to determine if the thesis merited the doctoral award and if they are any ethical breaches to be remedied. The irony of all this is that former Justice Minister Cho Guk, and his wife, Chung Kyung-shim, and their daughter and other persons have been relentlessly pursued by prosecutors (at Yoon's behest, in his former position as Prosecutor General) for over a year and half in court upon charges which began with an allegedly forged intern certificate, and whether or not, Cho's daughter should have been listed as a co- author on a scientific research paper. Cho's daughter apparently served as the English editor, translating the scientific nomenclature and terminology from the study, in Korean and English suitable for publication in a professional journal. Professor Chung Kyung-shim, Cho Guk's wife was sentenced to four years in prison, for allegedly creating the false internship certificate. Professor Chung Kyung-shim is currently confined in prison. The judgement and sentence are under appeal at the review trial level.

The conservative press has covered Cho Guk, his wife and daughter, relentlessly, publishing every baseless rumor and libelous allegation they can conceive. Failures of proof in court, unlawful procedures, and other developments embarrassing the prosecution, showing how the case was improbably crafted by the prosecution are never discussed except in independent media. Consequently, Cho Guk, a former law professor, as well as being a former aide to the Blue House for civil affairs, has literally brought dozens of libel suits against his family's tormentors in the media, which has proven somewhat effective in multiple cases. One problem is the relatively small judgements in defamation cases in South Korea. In the latest case to make the news, where Cho and his daughter are pictured as theives in a prostitution ring, Cho has threatened to sue the major media cartel Chosun Ilbo in the US where defamation judgements are much larger. ( Chosun Ilbo has an branch in LA). The conservative newspaper immediately printed a retraction and apology.

*열린공감TV is the main media source of these reports alleging corruption by Yoon's mother in law and wife. It is an independent investigative journalism channel on youtube. A live broadcast yesterday on this subject by 열린공감TV received over 360 thousand views. Their reports are sometimes supported by audio recordings of anonymous witnesses who claim to know or have had a familial relationship with Choi, Yoon's mother in law, and wife. Recordings of Choi herself, or admissions by Choi in former trials, and official documents, are also used to support the stories. The reports then go viral on social media. Evidence is largely circumstantial and 열린공감TV itself typically admits that further investigation is required to support the allegations. Nevertheless, the uproar is bleeding into the South Korean mainstream media, typically in a diluted or rebuttal form. 열린공감TV leads come from extensive recorded interviews with Jang Dae-taek, a former business partner of Choi, convicted years ago, of extortion in a business partnership with Choi. In a legal turn about, Jang was sentenced to two years in prison after he charged that Choi defrauded him of more than 2 million dollars. After this alleged injustice, Jang's legal pursuit of Choi in the courts has been ongoing for seventeen years. Jang accuses Choi and Kim of bribery, improper influence on public prosecutors, forgery, fraud, perjury, and obstruction of justice. None of his legal petitions or complaints have gained any results.

Recent South Korean Presidential Campaign Polling results

(Source- 알리미 황희두 7.3 youtube) 윤석열 지지율 폭락!! etc. Yoon Seok-yeol's support suddenly drops!

This poll was taken after Yoon's June 29 announcement which I described briefly in an earlier post. It is not clear if this survey was finished before the conviction of Yoon's mother-in-law for medical fraud on July 2. The first bar graph shows that Lee Jae-myung, the leading democratic party candidate, has taken an 8 point lead over Yoon Seok-yeol, the leading conservative candidate in a head to head survey. The second graph above shows the results in a theoretical 3 way contest with Yoon running an independent candidacy outside the main conservative party (the so called People's Power Party). In this hypothetical three way contest a nominal PPP candidate would take 9.5 percent of votes reducing Yoon's support to 29.8 percent. Obviously there are all the caveats concerning polls, margins of error, and making inferences so early in the campaign season.

( Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 7.3 youtube) '리서치뷰'의 충격 여론조사 발표!! etc. Research View shocking public opinion survey revealed...

A similar poll examination of a hypothetical three way race among conservative Yoon, and the two leading democratic party candidates is shown above. This puts Lee Jae-myung, the leading democratic candidate for president in a dead heat against Yoon Seok-yeol, with spoiler Lee Nak yeon in a distant third place at 9.5 percent. Lee Nak yeon's campaign is in distress since he recommended that former conservative presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak, both currently in prison for corruption be pardoned for their crimes. His support plummeted precipitously after that.

( Source- 언론 알아야 바꾼다 7.3 youtube)

Lee Nak-yeon appeared with other democratic candidate hopefuls meeting the public interview session on national television yesterday. Lee Nak-yeon and the other minor candidates for president in the democratic party spent their time nitpicking at the leading candidate Lee Jae-myung, the current governor of Gyeonggido, a large province surrounding Seoul. Lee "JM" is somewhat progressive with a proposal for universal basic income and a strong management style regarding economic challenges facing his province and the country. With the exception of the former Justice Minister Chu Mi-ae, the other democratic candidates don't present strong policy initiatives consistent with the current Moon administration's approach.

Alternatively, Lee Nak-yeon as shown by the graphic was distinguished by the poor decision to shoot himself in the foot by criticizing the Moon administration's appointment of Cho Guk as Justice Minister, which has been a debacle, since the indictment and arrest of his wife, and the related indictment of himself, which were allegedly ordered by Yoon personally, the former Prosecutor General. Many democratic party rank and file members regard the Cho Guk indictments and trials as a politically motivated witch hunt, because Cho was the point man for the long standing democratic party desire to reform the administration of justice in South Korea.

Lee Nak-yeon claimed in the televised interview, that he as party representative prime minister (edit) advised the Moon administration two days before Cho Guk's appointment that he was against it. This public admission by Lee Nak-yeon is sure to be viewed very unfavorably by many democrats and will probably reduce his support further. Cho Guk was forced to resign a little more than a month into his appointment by the political uproar concerning the alleged corruption of his wife and himself. He was portrayed, by the opposition party and the conservative press, to be hypocrite as a reform minded politician. It also needs to be observed that Cho Guk would no doubt be a leading presidential candidate today but for these events. He and his spouse, who was sentenced to four years imprisonment in a trial of dubious fairness, are still embroiled in criminal litigation. His wife is in prison pending the results of her trial on review.Cho Guk's recent memoir of his experience being run out of office and of the politically motivated persecution of his family is currently a best seller in South Korea.

Cho's successor as justice minister, Chu Mi-ae, appears to have orchestrated a solid personnel strategy of dismantling Yoon Seok-yeol's politically oriented machine inside the prosecution offices nationally. Yoon has been tainted with a second disciplinary committee decision finding he breached his professional duties as prosecutor while in office. This measure was directed by Chu Mi-ae and unfortunately squelched (wrongly as it turns out) by an administrative review court. Recently, the Constitutional Court rejected Yoon's appeal of the decision by the disciplinary committee, but he had already left the Prosecutor General position to run for president. Chu Mi-ae is regarded as having turned in a consistent and principle driven performance at the telelvised public interview, having maintained her commitment to carry out the necessary political reforms to save the South Korean democracy from corruption and authoritarian practices. Ironically, Yoon claimed these were his purposes in declaring himself a presidential candidate on June 29, accusing the democratic administration of being a threat to democracy and a dictatorship in ridiculous hyperbole projecting his own authoritarian characteristics onto the democratic administration. Yoon's drive to become President of the Korean Republic has the appearance of a desperate effort to stop the criminal investigations of his family and himself.

Yoon's mother-in-law, Choi Eun-soon, convicted of medical fraud!

And sent to jail! This is a major development. Yoon announces his candidacy for president of South Korea and three days later, his mother in law, at last, is locked up. Talk about timing! Maybe their luck has run out. She is a professional criminal. In Korean such a con artist is known as a sagigoon ( 사기꾼 ).

(Source- 열린공감TV, 7.2 youtube) [속보] 윤석열 장모 최은순 "실형 3년" 선고! Breaking news- Yoon Seok-yeol's mother in law, Cho Eun-soon, sentenced to three years confinement!

Yoon Seok-yeol’s mother in law, Choi Eun-soon, was found guilty of defrauding the South Korean Medical Insurance Public Corporation of rehabilitation funds by her deep involvement in the establishment of the rehab facility and its management. The trial court in Uijongbu found that not only was she not qualified to operate a medical treatment facility by law, but also that she played a leading role in defrauding the government entity of 2 billion 90 million won damaging the government health care system. She was sentenced to three years in prison and immediately committed to confinement by the court. Her attorney said she will appeal.

This is headline news. The mother in law of the number one conservative political candidate for president is jailed for defrauding the government health insurance agency of approximately 2 million dollars and nothing is published yet in English language media either in Korea or the US. Recently, Yoon was widely quoted in South Korean social media and independent news outlets defending his mother-in-law claiming that, "no person had ever lost a dime by any act of his mother-in-law." This may be the beginning of the end for the former prosecutor known as the "wild pig from Seocho." The issue remains why wasn't Yoon's mother in law found guilty years ago with her partners in the medical scam? Was it because of her son in law's influence?

Some observers on the democratic side believe that the actions of the former Justice Minister Chu Mi-ae in removing jurisdiction from the Prosecutor General's office effectively curtailed its ability to supervise or interfere in criminal investigations involving Yoon, his wife, mother in law, or his former subordinates. This action, in conjunction with extensive personnel transfers in, and consequent resignations from, prosecution offices since Chu stepped down from office, has apparently opened the door for reinvestigation of several suspected cases of fraud, forgery, perjury, bribery or obstruction of justice against members of the Yoon coterie. Those cases where grounds cannot be found to avoid the statute of limitation expiry dates could still be exploited either in the National Assembly or on the campaign trail for political purposes to damage Yoon's election prospects.

The judgement (and continuing litigation) against Choi Eun-soon will have a negative impact on Yoon's campaign prospects. One would like to think that this court judgement would end the facile observation that accusations of corruption against the Yoon family members are merely speculation. We now have two administrative disciplinary actions taken against Yoon for unprofessiional behavior and now a criminal conviction of his mother in law. It is almost certain that there will be unfavorable findings and legal determinations in the former Prosecutor General's future.

Addendum, 7.4:

The point is made on the right that "guilt by association" is not a fair practice in a country under the rule of law. So the opposition on the right seeks the benefit of an impartial justice system which their candidate, Yoon Seok-yeol as the former Prosecutor General, is most responsible for undermining. In December 2012, the ministry of justice at that time under the supervision of Justice Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, sent a letter to Jeong Dae-taek, responding to a complaint he had made that Yoon Seok-yeol had interfered in a law suit he had brought against Yoon's mother in law. Jeong claimed in the complaint that Choi, Yoon's mother in law, had soliticited perjury, forged documents, and otherwise obstructed justice, in a criminal trial and other litigation related to a business deal in which he lost 2.5 billion won to his erstwhile partner, and was sent to prison for two years in a miscarriage of justice. Kim Geon-hee, Yoon's wife, allegedly bribed the key witness, a legal clerk, in the original criminal trial to perjure himself. Jeong's point was tha Yoon was living with Kim Gyeon-hee, the defendant's daughter, a person with interest in the suit, when the case was brought. The letter from the justice ministry concerning the disciplinary action taken against Yoon did not state clearly the basis for the response to Jeong's complaint against Yoon, and is therefore regarded as an arbitrary coverup. The letter implied the matter had been disposed of by a one month suspension of Yoon's official duties as a prosecutor as a sanction.

There is one other fraud case against Yoon's mother in law in litigation right now for forgery in presenting over 30 billion won in fake bank deposit certifications in another business deal. A third case against her involves her allegedly unlawful acquistion of mortuary management rights. Yoon's wife is under investigation for large commissions paid by corporate sponsors received in connection with her Kobana Contents art exhibition business. These are suspected to be attempts to buy influence with Yoon. Yoon's mother in law and wife are also suspected of having engaged in unlawful stock transactions in the Deustche Motors case. Yoon himself is suspected of using his office to protect his family from investigations and prosecutions and protect subordinates suspected of unlawful conduct. He is also suspected of dereliction of duty in the Optimus Fund scandal. In all, eight investigations are under way. The notion that they are all politically motivated and contrived is absurd. These investigations are the result of politically motivated obstruction of justice over the years inside the offices of the prosecution. This is what the reform policies of the democratic party and the Moon administration are all intended to change.

This is portion of a hanging scroll in the Yongjusa temple in Hwaseong. Kim Hong-do was an artist employed by the court of King Jeongjo. The temple's famous scroll hanging painting by Kim Hong-do has Seokamoni in center, Amitaba to the right and Bhaisajyaguru to the left. Kim and his artists worked on this Buddhist image hanging scroll for 216 days. Prior to painting this scroll, Jeongjo had sent Kim Hong-do and another artist to Beijing to seek out according to his interest art techniques that could be brought back to Korea. There Kim was exposed to currently unknown western art works on display in a protestant church. Kim adopted the techniques he observed there and later used at Yongjusa. In particular he observed and mastered the techniques of perspective and chiaroscuro from the western renaissance style he observed in religious art to give his paintings a life like quality previously unseen in Korea. He is therefore known as Korea's "renaissance artist."

Yongjoosa is a head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It is located in on the slopes of Hwasan in Taean-eup, Hwaseong, in the province of Gyeonggi, South Korea. The temple's name means "dragon jewel temple." ... The temple was initially established in 854 AD, under the name Garyangsa. It was expanded in the 10th century. It was rebuilt in the late 18th century under the orders of Jeongjo in honor of his deceased father, Prince Sado. This is one of few cases where the Joseon royal house supported Buddhism directly. At this time the temple changed to its current name.

Kim Hong-do was the official court painter for King Jeongjo of Chosun. His paintings of formal court occassions are treasured records of formal Chosun rites, customs and organization. The most famous depictions are the paintings of a procession outside the palace to Hwaseong where Jeongjo's father Prince Sado was buried. This is the famous Panchado recording the hwigwoe of King Jeongjo's mother (Prince Sado's widow) on the occassion of her sixtieth birthday. The size and order of the procession depict the power of the royal family for the public to see. The procession took place in February 1795. It was planned for two years by King Jeongjo. The official record of the royal procession was printed with metal movable type and recorded in multiple volumes. It was completed in 1797. Six thousand persons and 1400 horses were required for the procession. The train of participants extended for four kilometers. Kim Hong-do supervised the royal court's team of artists painting the procession. The Panchado depicting the composition of the procession in its entirety is 15 meters long. The court procession is composed of nobles, soldiers, scholars, and civil servants. The royal procession proceeded to the new Hwaseong fortress built in Suwon traveling through the countryside. After his arrival there, Jeongjo excersized the five thousand soldiers of his guard day and night at Hwaseong in a demonstration of his power, to the nobles of the Noron faction who had intrigued against his father. Having restored his father's prestige, Jeongjo began his return to Seoul. This is just a small portion of the procession painting:
